Frederick Wiseman
Observational Cinema.
Wiseman's 1968 film, High School, follows teachers and students through a typical day at a Philadelphia high school. This is a form of observational cinema, moreover, a type called 'direct cinema' in which the filmmaker assumes the role of a "fly on the wall." Nevertheless, the presence of the camera is felt - thus changing the reality of the situations filmed.

Shot in 1967 at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution at Bridgewater, a state prison for the criminally insane, Titicut Follies documents the various ways the inmates were treated by guards, social workers and psychiatrists.
IN JACKSON HEIGHTS, Frederick Wiseman's 40th documentary, premieres at Film Forum in New York on November 4.
