STOPMOTION

Photocollage

These photo collages were done by Mark Tapley - ‘For an experimental media project, I made a series of collages inspired by the work of Coldwar Steve. They are meant to look like Doctor Who DVD covers, with each cover being a satirical cut-up based on the sociopolitical themes that were used in classic episodes of Doctor Who (From the left: The theme of the ‘The Daleks’ was the fear of radiation, the theme of ‘The Dalek Invasion of Earth’ was discrimination and the theme of ‘The War Games’ was peace and war). Contrary to popular belief, Doctor Who has always been politically inspired.’

Photography & Moving Image

Sidnay Banks

‘I have cut up these photographs and stuck them over each other to create a new image and story. This is to demonstrate that same sex relationships in that era would have been forbidden and very taboo... The images are to show that these relationships did happen, albeit behind closed doors’

This film has been made from found footage of super 8mm home movies from the 1970's. A new narrative has been created demonstrating that same sex relationships were taking place at that time.

In this film, made again by using found footage, a man is secretly fantasising over other men...

These films were exhibited as an installation. Sidnay made a box based on early Kinetoscope’s, to show the films, so the films were watched in private, intimately.

(Below) - ‘This is a video portrait and was filmed at 100 frames per second. Played back at the normal rate of 24 frames per second, it is in slow motion. This is to explore the boundaries between still and moving image.’

12 Boxes Installation
’Each image has been placed in its own individual box. It has been attached to four blocks on the back plate, giving the illusion of it “floating” in the box. With the images being mounted in this way, they can continue to decay by curling at the edges. With the images being inside the boxes, it makes them precious objects which nobody can touch. They have become forbidden.
I have chosen each image to be decaying in different ways to make the piece look like a multitude of emotions. It looks more like sustained frustration, anger, hurt, etc.
The variety of images will challenge the viewer to look through all twelve boxes and make links between the image and how I am holding myself and the way it has been attacked. I believe this will be more complex and engaging.’
